Dan has the sort of voice that could pop the cork of a champagne bottle, brutally honest lyrics that run sinuously close to the bone and melodies that plant themselves under your skin like jumping beans in the sun. The harmonies and intertwining rhythms create a sensational sound that will leave you both stunned and in need of more at the same time.
His debut release ‘The Balloon: The Bubble & The Box’ is a series of 3 EPs recorded with an eclectic ensemble that fuses ambient guitar, classical piano and strings with explosive tempo changes which leave you breathless upon the first listen.
Described as ’sensational’ by Tom Robinson (BBC 6 Music), Dan has recently supported Lykke Li, Ida Maria, Kaki King, Joseph Arthur, Gary Go, Josh Ritter, and Maria McKee.
Encouraged to take piano lessons from the age of 6, it wasn’t long before Dan yearned for a guitar so he could rekindle his childhood memories of listening to old Beatles tracks. He wasted no time when he eventually persuaded his parents to buy an £8 acoustic from the local junk shop, along with one of his parents’ friends volunteering as music tutor. Consequently, this ignited Dan’s love for ‘50s rock and roll such as Eddie Cochran and Buddy Holly.
His musical career began as back-up guitarist for fellow Wulfrunian Carina Round, followed by 3 years with indie rockers Naomi (Liquid, Gut Records 1999), before grabbing the lead vocal mic and heading for London with his own band ‘Sonara’ at the age of 21. It wasn’t long before Dan wanted to get a taste as a musical troubadour and has grown as a solo artist tenfold within the last two years. This is only the beginning and there are many more hopes and inspirations to come from Dan as of yet. Watch this space.
