Mastering

So, what exactly is mastering?

Mastering is the art of refining and polishing finished stereo mixes and making them ready for distribution. It is important to unify the sound across your entire release and maintain consistency.

How does it work?

How the finishing touches are applied to your release and the way they enhance particular sonic characteristics can be the difference between a good sounding mix and a professional-sounding master. This is done by making subtle adjustments to EQ, selectively adding compression, limiting, stereo enhancement, and other psychoacoustic tricks like aural excitation.

It is very important to make sure that your release flows nicely when played one after the other. The sound should be consistent and the levels should match so that there isn’t suddenly a particular track is louder or quieter than the rest, meaning that the listener has to adjust the volume accordingly.

There are many other steps and considerations involved in the mastering process, but these are some of the main points to keep in mind.
